The biggest obstacle faced by the trans-Andean railroad was the Nariz del Diablo, a mountain in the southern Ecuadorian Andes, with almost perpendicular walls. To overcome this obstacle, a zig-zag road was built over a 500-meter drop in just 12 km of vertiginous ascent or descent, which is still an impressive engineering work today.
